| From mystical Babylonian and the Sumerian
culture of the Mesopotamian Valley, over 5,000 years ago, comes an
ancient God Oannes (Sumero-Babylonian god Ea). Many assume
this character is merely a myth or legend of the Sumerians, other
believe he visited Earth from an extraterrestrial source while even
others believe he originated in the mythical Atlantis; the last know
survivor. Legend says, he came from the Erythraean sea to teach mankind
the basic arts of civilization: agriculture, metallurgy, architecture,
navigation, mathematics and medicine. Once he had accomplished his
task he returned to the sea. |
 |
 |
Oannes was called 'Lord of the Waves' and has been depicted
as an amphibious creature with the torso and head of a man, with
his bottom half resembling that of a dolphin. Early images of Oannes
show him as a man wrapped in a fish cloak. A civilizing force for
the good, and light and life to his people, Oannes represented the
positive values connected with the sea.
|
| Some texts suggest he dwells in a fresh
water abyss while others imply the oceans of the world are his domain.
He has been accredited for giving civilization to man. |
 |
 |
Oannes' likeness as fish tailed God appears in Babylonian cylinder
seals, in Persian coins, in Etruscan amphoras, in Phoenician coins,
on Greco-Phoenician scarabs, and in the reliefs of the Palace of
Sargon.
